Blog Post #5: Goldfinches

Blog Post #5: Goldfinches

Do you believe in miracles?  I want to share something with you that happened to me.

My Dad passed away on August 10, 2019.  A month later, on September 10 in the morning before school, my son told me he had prayed that morning that God would send a goldfinch as a sign that Grandpa was in Heaven THAT day.

I was terrified because 1) I didn’t want him to lose his faith in God, 2) you shouldn’t put God to the test, and 3) I knew a goldfinch wouldn’t come.  We saw them rarely and when we did it was usually in Spring.  I corrected his blasphemous thinking, explaining how we don’t test God, and sent everyone on their way to school.  I didn’t give his prayer much more thought.

Later that day as I was doing work around the house I noticed a high-pitch chirp coming from the front yard.  As I walked toward the front windows I could see a flash of yellow on the Echinacea.  I got out my phone and began taking video and photos.  I was astounded.  There

was indeed a goldfinch, that day, at 2:18 p.m. on September 10, 2018, one month to the day after my Dad’s passing.  Any earlier and I wouldn’t have been home.  Any later, and I would have been picking up the kids from school.  I couldn’t wait to share the video and photos with my kids.  I couldn’t believe it.  I also felt some horror at my lack of faith, and respect for my son and the faith of a child.  I truly felt it was a sign from God that my Dad was at the banquet feast, in the house of many rooms, where eye has not seen and ear has not heard, the beauty and majesty of the place God has prepared for those who love Him.

It would still be a wonderful, miraculous story if that was the end of the story.  But there is more to it, which I will publish in post number six.
