How to Use Spray Paint on a Champagne Bottle

When it comes to painting a champagne bottle, using the spray paint method can provide a smooth and even finish.  If you're painting in pleasant weather, I recommend it, though the gesso method may be better for you in winter depending on your climate.  Spray paint can only be used when the humidity is below 65 percent.

What materials do you need?

To paint a champagne bottle using the spray paint method, you will need the following materials:

  • Champagne bottle
  • Spray paint in your desired color
  • Artist or painter's tape
  • Acrylic or glass paint
  • Varnish
  • Thin brushes
  • Newspaper

How to prepare the champagne bottle for painting?

Before you start painting, make sure to clean the champagne bottle thoroughly to remove any dirt or residue from price labels. Once the bottle is clean and dry, use painter's tape to mask off the labels. Go outside and lay newspaper or a dropcloth down on the ground. I do this outdoors in 50-90 degree weather when the humidity is below 65%.

How to paint the champagne bottle using the spray paint method?

Hold the spray paint can approximately 6-8 inches away from the champagne bottle. Apply a light, even coat of paint, moving the can in a steady top to bottom motion and then STOP. Do not go over the same area twice until it has dried completely.  This part is tedious, but you do not want to get drips.  Allow the first coat to dry completely before applying additional coats as needed. Make sure to follow the instructions on the spray paint can for the best results.

How to finish the painted champagne bottle?

Once you are satisfied with the coverage and finish of the paint, let the champagne bottle dry completely before handling it. Now you can decorate the bottle with whatever design you choose.  Perhaps a wedding monogram?  Perhaps a favorite team for the birthday gentleman? Remove the painter's tape carefully to reveal clean lines. When your design is finished, varnish the bottle and let dry.

With the spray paint method, painting a champagne bottle can be a special and personalized gift. Whether you want to create a centerpiece for a special occasion or add a pop of color to your decor, this technique can help you achieve a professional finish. Remember to work in a well-ventilated area and follow all safety precautions when using spray paint.
