Five Style Lessons from Kate Middleton

Audrey Hepburn. Grace Kelly. Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis. Princess Diana.

When it comes to elegance, Kate Middleton, the Duchess of Cambridge, is the style icon of our time. Her classic and tasteful fashion choices have captivated the world, making her a role model for many women. If you want to emulate her sophisticated style, read on for my key takeaways to achieve Kate Middleton-worthy style.

Wear One Color or Pattern

One thing you'll never think when looking at Kate Middleton's outfits: "That looks really busy!" I've noticed she often dresses monochromatically, wearing one solid color from head to toe.  When she wears a pattern it is usually on a dress. I don't see her in skirts very often. To get an idea for this type of dressing, check out one of Kate's favorite designers: Emilia Wickstead You will see it appears they design their collections with Kate in mind! Scrolling through their website is like taking a peak into Kate's royal closet.

Opt for Neutral Shoes

The nude shoe is a staple in Kate Middleton's wardrobe. She popularized the now-famous nude pump in the early 2000s, so much so that the L.K. Bennett Sledge Court shoe now resides in the Victoria and Albert collection in London. Whatever your skin tone is, finding a similar shade heel will elongate the leg. Kate frequently rotates other solid neutral shades such as tan, stark black and sophisticated navy, for a polished and put-together look.

Accessorize with Grace

Accessories can elevate any outfit, and Kate Middleton knows how to accessorize with grace. She never forgets her earrings, but rarely wears anything outlandish. Opt for delicate jewelry, a stately brooch and structured handbags to add a touch of sophistication to your ensemble. My personal favorite is Kate's gloves, made by Cornelia James. I have the daytime bow gloves in black. I wear them on my walk to Sunday mass and they live in my church coat. Remember, you don't have to be royalty to feel like one!

Embrace Modesty

Kate Middleton is known for her modest and demure style. I have theorized that Kate hasn't worn a hemline above the knee since turning 40; however this is hard to prove. She is one of the most photographed women in the world and I can't always verify the date of the photograph. One thing is sure, she has definitely embraced longer hemlines in recent years. Another thing is sure: the skin above our knees changes as we age. One can't go wrong embracing modesty by opting for longer hemlines, higher necklines, and tailored silhouettes. Dressing modestly keeps the focus on the dignity of the human person in the clothes, rather than the body wearing them.

Never Sport a Logo or Monogram

This is simple. As my mother would say, "You're nobody's billboard." Kate never wears something covered in logos.  Why would she?

By following these lessons from Kate Middleton, you can elevate your style and dress like a lady. Embrace timeless pieces, graceful accessories, and modesty to channel the sophisticated and elegant style of the Duchess of Cambridge.

XOXO,

Anne

P.S. Is there anything you've taken from observing Kate over the years?
